Insulation thickness calculator

Thickness = target R-value ÷ R-value per inch. Because every product is slightly different, RValueCalc shows a typical figure and a range. This page starts with R-30 in fiberglass batts at about R-3.2 per inch, which is roughly 9½ inches; the range across products is about 8 to 10½ inches. Choose another material or target to compare, for example closed-cell spray foam reaches R-30 in under 5 inches.

Saved you some time? Leave a tip, entirely optional.

Insulation only reaches its rated value when it is not compressed. A batt squeezed into a shallower cavity has a lower R-value than its label.

    How the R-value calculator works

RValueCalc multiplies the depth of the existing insulation by its typical R-value per inch, subtracts that from your target and divides the rest by the new material's R-value per inch. The range uses the lowest and highest per-inch values in the chart. U = 1 ÷ R, RSI = R × 0.1761 and heat flow = area × temperature difference ÷ R.

Per-inch values: US Department of Energy and Building America Solution Center (PNNL) typical ranges; mineral wool batts vary most (older batts ≈ R-3.1, current stone-wool batts up to ≈ R-4.3). Recommended levels: ENERGY STAR, based on 2021 IECC Table R402.1.3. Results are estimates: product labels give the rated R-value for a stated thickness, and local codes set the legal minimums.

    Frequently asked questions

    How thick is R-30 insulation?

About 9½ inches of fiberglass batt, 8½ inches of blown cellulose or 12 inches of loose-fill fiberglass.

    How thick is R-13?

R-13 fiberglass batts are 3½ inches thick to fit 2×4 walls; R-19 batts are about 6¼ inches.

Which insulation has the highest R per inch?

Closed-cell spray foam and polyiso board, at roughly R-6 to R-7 per inch.
