Insulation R-value chart

The chart below lists typical R-values per inch for common insulation materials, with the range you will see across products and the thickness needed for R-30 and R-49. Loose-fill fiberglass has the lowest R per inch of the common materials and closed-cell foam the highest. RValueCalc uses the typical figures in the calculator; pick a material and target above to see your own numbers.

Values are from the US Department of Energy and the Building America Solution Center. Polyiso boards lose some R-value in very cold weather.

    How the R-value calculator works

RValueCalc multiplies the depth of the existing insulation by its typical R-value per inch, subtracts that from your target and divides the rest by the new material's R-value per inch. The range uses the lowest and highest per-inch values in the chart. U = 1 ÷ R, RSI = R × 0.1761 and heat flow = area × temperature difference ÷ R.

Per-inch values: US Department of Energy and Building America Solution Center (PNNL) typical ranges; mineral wool batts vary most (older batts ≈ R-3.1, current stone-wool batts up to ≈ R-4.3). Recommended levels: ENERGY STAR, based on 2021 IECC Table R402.1.3. Results are estimates: product labels give the rated R-value for a stated thickness, and local codes set the legal minimums.

    Frequently asked questions

What is the R-value of fiberglass per inch?

About R-2.9 to R-3.8 for batts and R-2.2 to R-2.7 for loose fill.

What is the R-value of cellulose per inch?

About R-3.2 to R-3.8 when settled.

    Is XPS or EPS better?

XPS is about R-5 per inch and EPS about R-4, but EPS costs less per R and keeps its R-value well. Both work as rigid insulation.

    Is RValueCalc free?

Yes, with no sign-up or ads.
